Biography

Manjula Fernando is a Senior Professor at Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. At present he is Head of the Department. He is a Charted Electrical Engineer, International Professional Engineer and member of the Institution of Engineers (Sri Lanka). He is a senior member of IEEE and was the founder chair of IEEE Power Energy Society Sri Lanka chapter in 2010, the chair of IEEE Sri Lanka Central Region subsection in 2009 and the general chair of Fourth IEEE International Conference on Industrial and Information Systems (ICIIS2009) in 2009. Manjula Fernando is the author or co-author of around 100 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

Biography

Vernon Cooray is a Sri Lankan-Swedish scientist who is a professor at Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden. He is the current president (2014 – 2020) of the International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP). Vernon Cooray is the author or co-author of around 350 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. He has edited three books: The Lightning Flash, Lightning Protection and Lightning Electromagnetics, all published by ITE London, UK. He is the author of Introduction to Lightning which is published by Springer. For this book, he received the best book prize of 2015 from the association of librarians.

In recognition of his contribution to lightning research in Sri Lanka he was awarded the D.Sc. honorary degree in 2015 by the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. In October 2015 Vernon Cooray has received the prestigious Karl Berger Award for extraordinary theoretical and experimental achievements in lightning research. For his contributions to lightning research and lightning protection, he was elected as a fellow of the IEEE in 2017.

Biography

Srinivasan Venkatesh is a Professor at the School of Electrical Engineering, Vellore Institute of Technology, India. His research interests are Lightning Protection, Insulation Diagnostics, Software Engineering and Data Mining. His current projects are 'Artificial Intelligence based PD Recognition Techniques' and ‘Lightning Protection System of Heritage Monuments’. Prior to his stint in academics, he was with Alstom–T & D Projects, India as Assistant Manager–Engineering & QA wherein he was actively involved in detailed design and engineering of electrical systems for EHV Substations. He is the author or co-author for over 50 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. He is a member of IEEE- Dielectrics & Electrical Insulation Society and Industrial Applications Society.

Tutorial on “Recent Developments in Machine Learning”

Machine Learning is the subject of extracting useful information from large and complex datasets. It is a multi-disciplinary subject, drawing its strengths from function approximation, probability theory, statistical inference, dynamical systems and parallel computing. Huge advances on a range of practical problems including Computer Vision, Machine Translation, Speech Recognition and Computer Games were made in recent years using techniques of machine learning. This tutorial will survey mathematical methods and computational algorithms underpinning these developments and highlight open research issues. There will be a practical element to the tutorial for which participants are expected to have some knowledge of programming (Python preferred).

Biography

Mahesan Niranjan is Professor of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton, UK. Prior to this appointment in 2008, has held academic positions at the Universities of Sheffield and Cambridge. At The University of Sheffield, he has also held administrative positions as Head of the Department of Computer Science and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. Professor Niranjan has degrees from the Universities of Peradeniya (BSc), Eindhoven (MEE) and Cambridge (PhD). He has published over 150 peer reviewed papers on both the theoretical/algorithmic and applied aspects of machine learning. His current research has a heavy focus on problems in molecular biology and healthcare

Mr. Sampath Deegalla

Biography

Mr. D.S. Deegalla received Ph.Lic. (2011) in Computer and Systems Sciences from Stockholm University, Sweden and B.Sc. Eng. (2002) in Computer Engineering from University of Peradenya, Sri Lanka. He joined the University of Peradeniya as an Assistant Lecturer in 2002 and he was appointed as a Senior Lecturer at University of Peradeniya in 2011.
