The University of Peradeniya is the successor to the University of Ceylon, founded on July 1, 1942, the first institution of its kind in the country. It is located about 6 km from the city of Kandy – the historic capital of the last independent kingdom of Sri Lanka, and about 106 km from Colombo.

The Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya is the first engineering faculty in Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1950 and shifted to its present location at Peradeniya in 1964. The Faculty of Engineering is one of the nine Faculties of the University of Peradeniya, the most prestigious university in Sri Lanka located in an idyllic setting on the banks of the Mahaweli River and at the foothills of the Hantana mountain range.
